Keep 'em leashed!

Unless an exercise specifically requires that you take the dog off leash, keep your dog on a leash at all times while training.

Don't be a pest

Don’t allow your dog to sniff, pester, or play with other dogs before or during training sessions.

Starve 'em out

Don’t feed your dog for at least four hours before training to help for reward dispensing.

potty break!

Before your training practice sessions, be sure to allow your dog to use the bathroom.

pick up your shit

If you’re leaving the house, bring bags to clean up after your dog’s waste.

let them rest

Practice with your dog when he is well rested. However, moderate exercise a few hours before training is fine and may actually enhance learning for some high-energy dogs.

keep your goal in mind

Consult your trainer or your training plan before practicing. Remember to be patient, flexible, and with your goal in mind.

make the time

Set aside time each day to train your dog. 5-10 minutes three times a day is a great place to start.

hands are for helping

Rough or abusive treatment will not serve your training well. If a dog disobeys your commands, chances are he doesn’t understand or needs more help. Rethink what you’re doing, check the training manual to refresh your memory and try again.
